Acupuncture

If you’ve never experienced acupuncture before, it can seem a little overwhelming at first.

But this ancient healing treatment is one of the oldest still in use today, with its roots in ancient Chinese history.

Dr. Simona offers naturopathic acupuncture treatments, which modern scientific research has found to be effective in treating a wide range of different health ailments.

What Is Acupuncture?

The first confirmed evidence of acupuncture is from an ancient Chinese medical guidebook called The Esoteric Scripture Of The Yellow Emperor, which may be up to 4000 years old. It has been practiced with varying degrees of popularity in China since then, but it wasn’t until US President Nixon opened up relations with China that it became popular here in North America.

The treatment itself involves inserting very tiny, soft, thin needles into your skin at specific points along your body’s meridianal channels.

Energy flows through these channels, and the strategic placement of acupuncture needles along specific acupuncture points can help enhance flow, which nourishes your internal organs.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, a healthy state is achieved through balancing of energy, while an imbalance is what leads to illness. Acupuncture helps bring your energy flow back into balance.

What Is An Acupuncture Treatment Like?

When you arrive, Dr. Simona will examine you and assess your condition. If it seems like you could benefit from acupuncture, Dr. Simona will lie you down on your back, front, or one of your sides depending on where your treatment is needed.

From there, she will insert one or more acupuncture needles into the acupuncture points along the meridianal channels of your body. These are single-use, disposable needles which have been sterilized.

After the needle is inserted, you may feel a brief tingling or stinging sensation. In rare cases, you may feel a dull ache which generally disappears after a few moments. For most people, acupuncture is a relatively painless treatment.

Most people who experience acupuncture describe a feeling of intense relaxation. Once the needles are in, they will stay in place for anywhere from five to thirty minutes, during which time you’ll be left alone to relax and allow the energy to flow.

Depending on your condition, you may need to book multiple treatments.

Is Acupuncture Right For Me?

In general, acupuncture comes with very few side effects, and the ones it does have are minor, like minor bleeding, bruising, or soreness.

Acupuncture can also be risky for patients on blood thinners or who have a disorder that makes their blood naturally thin. Dr. Simona will fully discuss the risks with you.

However, acupuncture is considered to be among the safest healthcare treatments available. Because it comes with so few risks and side effects, it can be easily combined with other treatment methods, both naturopathic and medical.
