Health Assessment
When you see a naturopathic doctor for the first time, you’re a bit of a blank slate.
Sure, you may have talked about some of the health issues you’ve been facing recently, but there’s a lot your naturopathic doctor needs to know about you in order to properly treat you.
And if it’s been a while since you saw your naturopathic doctor, there may have been changes in your health or life which your doctor needs to know about.
That’s what the naturopathic health assessment helps with. Like a physical assessment from your medical doctor, a naturopathic health assessment gives a snapshot of your current health status.
When you work with Dr. Simona, your first appointment will be to schedule a naturopathic health assessment.
What To Expect From A Naturopathic Health Assessment
When you first visit Dr. Simona at her clinic, you’ll need to fill out a form detailing your health history. After that, the health assessment will begin.
You’ll spend some time talking about what drove you to visit a naturopathic doctor in the first place, which may include some specific health concerns, a desire to avoid developing health concerns in the future, or a simple desire to live a healthier, more optimal life.
Based on what you tell Dr. Simona here, she will ask some further questions to explore why your symptoms may have come about. This will involve a longer talk-based exploration than most medical examinations and may be different than what you’re used to. Questions may address physical health as well as mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health.
Some of the information Dr. Simona will gather from you includes:
Family History
If Dr. Simona knows that you’re at higher risk for a certain disse based on your family history or genetics, she can develop for you a treatment plan designed to mitigate that risk.
Your Lifestyle
This includes certain bad habits which you may be a little embarrassed about mentioning to a naturopathic doctor. Dr. Simona promises to offer a judgment-free atmosphere.
Other lifestyle factors to consider include the amount of physical activity you’re getting, whether you work a job that’s hard on your body or more sedentary, or how your social life affects you. Each of these can influence your health on many different levels.
Your Diet And Nutritional Intake
And a poor diet can cause a wide range of different health concerns, including heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, osteoporosis, some forms of cancer, anxiety, depression, inability to cope with stress, and much more.
By examining your diet, Dr. Simona can help uncover any nutrients you may be lacking and how they connect to any symptoms you described.
Your Current Sources Of Stress
Stress is a natural part of life and something every single one of us has to face to varying degrees.
However, the stress you’re currently dealing with may be causing significant problems in your life.
Our bodies are designed to handle brief bursts of stress, but prolonged and sustained stress may lead to heart disease, weight problems, diabetes, digestive disorders, and Alzheimer’s, among others.
On top of this, prolonged stress actually affects our body’s ability to handle stress itself, which may lead to a vicious cycle.
By better understanding the sources of your stress, Dr. Simona can tailor your treatment plan accordingly.
Your Medical History
Naturally, Dr. Simona will need to understand any current illnesses you have. But even illnesses for which you no longer any signs or symptoms can still have an echo effect on your body.
Previous injuries or other forms of physical trauma can also have an impact on your health.
Dr. Simona needs to understand these and other significant life events to fully understand how you got to your current state and what strategies will work best for treating you.
Diagnostic Tools Used
Depending on the situation, Dr. Simona may use one or more of the following tools in assessing your health:
- Physical examination
- Nutritional/dietary examination
- Chinese tongue & pulse diagnosis
- Ultrasound, MRI, CT, and/or other imaging techniques
- Blood analysis
- Saliva analysis
- Urine analysis
- Previous medical records
